Global coffee chain Starbucks has named Marika McCauley Sine, a seasoned executive from Mars, as its new Global Chief Sustainability Officer.

She will take over from Michael Kobori, who has held the role since 2020 and plans to retire at the end of 2024. Reflecting on his time at Starbucks, Kobori thanked his team and partners across corporate, civil society, and government sectors for their efforts in making the company a leader in sustainability and social justice.

“It will be an honour to lead sustainability for such an impactful business and beloved brand, in collaboration with talented partners and community members around the world,” McCauley Sine said in a statement.

“I am inspired to help advance the Starbucks legacy of doing business with humanity and fostering connection, opportunity, and joy through exceptional coffee.”

At Starbucks, she will oversee the company’s sustainability efforts, including its ambitious targets to certify 10,000 Greener Stores worldwide by 2025 and cut carbon emissions, water use, and landfill waste in half by 2030.
