These rankings identify universities leading in social, economic, and environmental sustainability, using the framework of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley expressed pride in the university’s accomplishments, emphasizing its efforts to foster inclusive communities and promote environmental well-being.

QS evaluates universities based on Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance. Waikato earned a global ranking of 44th equal for Environmental Impact and achieved 14th globally and 1st in Oceania for Environmental Sustainability. This category evaluates both institutional practices and the influence of alumni in promoting sustainability in various sectors.

Advancing climate change research

Professor Quigley highlighted the university’s dedication to environmental issues, including advancing climate change research supported by government funding. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting partnerships with international universities and multidisciplinary work with academic and industry stakeholders.

Dr. Joe Ulatowski, Assistant Vice-Chancellor Sustainability, praised the university community for its contributions toward sustainability, as reflected in the latest rankings.

Recently, Waikato joined the Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE) Accord, underscoring its commitment to global climate agreements. This membership enables the university to exchange knowledge and resources with other signatories, advancing climate-conscious practices in the education sector.

In addition to its sustainability achievements, the University of Waikato is ranked 235th globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings and holds the top spot in New Zealand for research impact, as measured by citations per faculty. It is also ranked in the top 200 globally in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking.
